December 09 2018 - Counting Down 20 More Dice Days To X-Mas

With Christmas barely three whole weeks away (but who's counting?), it's time get in all the dice rolling gaming that you can!

  • Players need to assemble a team with a full complement of 20 dice.
  • In order to win, along with the traditional way of knocking an opponent to zero points, all 20 dice have to be purchased from their respective cards.
  • There is no restriction on the number of cards to play (somewhere between 5 to 8), but the total number of dice on the team must equal 20.

December 02 2018 - Set to Clash

It's that age-old comic book argument...
Which was better?
AvX?
War of Light?
D&D Battle For Faerun?
TMNT?

  • Players are to assemble a Golden Age event where a team and ALL of its parts MUST come from a single set.
  • This includes basic action cards.
  • So a team can feature cards from any set, but must only have cards from the same single set.

November 25 2018 - Return of the Rainbow

This weekend looks to be an amazing and crazy time - Thanksgiving, Shopping Specials for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday!

Why not add to it with a Dice Masters classic - a Rainbow Draft!

  • Players are invited to participate in a first-in-a-while Rainbow Draft event!
  • All that is required is a pair of basic action cards with their respective action dice, a set of 8 sidekick dice, and a little bit of spare change for the buy-in!

To match the event with the theme of the weekend, the draft packs will be ...

  • A Black Friday special !  That's right!
  • This event will be run with a HUGE DISCOUNT for all participants, requiring even LESS spare change than the typical draft to enter and play!

November 11 2018 - Global Escalation

Dice Masters is experimenting with a new format.  So of course, this needs playing.

Welcome to Global Escalation.  To be a valid option for gameplay, an assembled team needs to follow the two restrictions to team construction:

Cards/dice cannot be played on the team if...

 1) It has made the Finals of one of the following events:

     * Dice Masters World Championships 2015, 2016, 2017

     * Dice Masters US National Championships 2018

AND it doesn't have a Global Ability

2) Swords of Revealing Light, Relentless, and Cosmic Cube: Energy of the Beyonders are also disallowed,

    see the announcement here: https://wizkids.com/dicemasters/global-escalation/

Players are invited to put together a team under the above conditions.
Essentially, think of it as a Golden Age format event without access to certain cards/dice.
Aside from the restricted cards/dice, everything will be fair game to play.

October 28 2018 - Some Galaxy Over the Rainbow

Players are invited to a Guardians of the Galaxy Rainbow Draft!

That's right, the Rainbow Draft is back this week.

Each player will purchase 12 boosters from the set and draft 6 packs to the left followed by drafting 6 packs to the right.  Assemble the ideal team from the draft picks and challenge all who sit across from you.

Requirements:
Enough to purchase 12 packs
Two Modern Age basic action cards
A set of sidekick dice

October 21 2018 - Proving Worth on the Field of Combat

Time to try for some hands to get a little dirty again.

Players must bring a Modern Age team.  No other restrictions will be on team building.

  • However, gameplay will see a couple restrictions.
    • Only damage dealt through combat damage will be allowed to either die or player.
    • No other damage (targeted, triggered, or otherwise against characters or players) will be allowed.
    • Paying life will be allowed.

  • How does one deal with those pesky opposing dice, you may ask?
    • Forcing opposing character dice to be rerolled is one method.
    • Getting control of opposing characters is another.
    • Capture is another method.
    • Moving dice can be useful.
    • Be creative.

  • This rule will not affect life gaining effects.

October 07 & 14 2018 - Battling on a Battleworld

Both series of Marvel's Secret Wars involved a patchwork world where the heroes and villains fought.  What If that reality hits Dice Masters?

  • Players are invited to assemble a Golden Age team where 2 cards must come from DC, 2 cards must come from Marvel, 2 cards must be from D&D, and the remaining 2 may come from either Yu-Gi-Oh or TMNT sets (or both).

  • The 2 basic action cards may come from any set, but they must be from different worlds (example: a player can have a basic action card from DC and another from D&D, but can not have both from DC).

September 30 2018 - Proving Worth on the Field of Combat

Time for hands to get a little dirty.

Players must bring a Modern Age team.  No other restrictions will be on team building.

  • However, gameplay will see a couple restrictions.
  • Only damage dealt through combat damage will be allowed to either die or player.  No other damage (targetted, triggered, or otherwise against characters or players) will be allowed.
  • However, paying life will be allowed.

September 23 2018 - Got To Catch Them All

Players are to assemble a Modern Age team, where the first letter of each card's name has to be able to spell out the name of a Pokemon character with at least 7 letters.

  • Examples of possible choices:
    • Pikachu
    • Squirtle
    • Flareon
    • Venusaur
    • Pidgeot

Bring one basic action card, but bring two sets of basic action dice.

The second basic action card will be as follows:

  • Pokeball
  • 3 cost
  • Ability:
    • Take a 3 cost or less character die from its card and roll it.  If it rolls an energy face, return it to the card.  If it rolls a character face, put it into the field zone.
    • Take a 5 cost or less character die from its card and roll it.  If it rolls an energy face, return it to the card.  If it rolls a character face, put it into the field zone.
    • Take a 7 cost or less character die from its card and roll it.  If it rolls an energy face, return it to the card.  If it rolls a character face, put it into the field zone.

September 16 2018 - Rolling in the Rain

It's time to make it rain.  With all the stormy conditions that comes with recent weather, now is everyone's chance control the weather.

  • Players need to huddle together a Modern Age team where all characters need to have a meteorological flavor.
  • The names of 6 team cards need to have one of the following words (the remaining two must be action cards).
    • Storm
    • Weather
    • Lightning
    • Thunder
    • Cloud
    • Tornado
  • Standard game rules apply.

September 09 2018 - Zootopical

This one is for the wild side in every Dice Master player!

Players are invited to bring a standard Modern Age DM team, where all characters must have an animal related name or subtitle (and no, being human does not count as being an animal in this scenario).  There must be at least 7 characters per team.

Example:
Superman is out, but Batman is in the game.
Iron Man is out, but Rocket Raccoon is in the game.
Gwen Stacy: Public Menace is out, but Gwen Stacy: Spider-Ally is in the game (ooh, tricky).

September 02 2018 - What a Wonderful Gift

This Sunday feels like a special event kind of day.  This will be the kind of wonderful event where people's generosity will be celebratory and perhaps a little surprising.

  • Players are invited to participate in this special return-of-Dice-Masters event with a standard Modern Age team build.
  • Each team must have a version of Wonder Woman - this one card/dice can be from any set (even outside the Modern Age restriction).
  • Each team must have a card whose title starts with the following ("randomly" picked) letters:
    • S...
    • H...
    • A...
    • N...
    • B...
  • Y'know, for the last two cards, let's change things up!
    • One of those cards has to have the word, "Day" in it's title.
    • The other card has to be an non-basic action card that is represented as an object.
  • At the start of each game, each player will designate a number between 1 to 10 for each card except the Wonder Woman card.  In addition to the number assigned to it, any unused numbers gets assigned to the object card.
  • Once the numbers are assigned, roll a d10.
  • Whichever number is revealed, the player takes that card with its respective dice and passes it across to the opposing player to use on their respective team.
  • At the game's end, all cards and dice are returned to their original owner.
  • The Wonder Woman die will have the following ability;
    • Lasso of Truth - upon rolling up a character face on this die, the active player may force another die of a equal or lower level face to be re-rolled (friendly or not).
  • Game play will be a three-round standard tournament event.

August 26 2018 - Break

This week Dice Masters will be taking a little break due to Hurricane Lane

August 19 2018 - Break

This week Dice Masters will be taking a little break from the weekly events

August 12 2018 - Civilians

In the epic comic book battles of days past, the Heroes and Villains would clash much to the chagrin of the unpowered bystander.
This week, that all changes.

  • Players are invited to play in a Golden Age standard player vs player match where all dice are civilians.
  • Dice in this match must use characters that have the ally trait or is depicted on the character card as a regular person (ie: no costumes, no cartoon characters, no fantasy characters, just characters that are dressed in everyday suits, outfits, dresses, etc).

August 05 2018 - Team Pack and Go!

This week, Dice Masters will release three new Team Packs.  That's right.  THREE new team packs!
Count 'em.  One, Two, and THREE new team packs!
Only question now is - how to take advantage of this?  Time to find out.

  • Players need to bring a 4 card Modern Age team with no more than 10 dice.
  • Players will also purchase one of the new Dice Masters team packs and use its contents to add to the team. Once fully assembled, each player should be able to field an 8 card team.
  • In addition to the standard tournament win rules, players must field at least one die from each of the newly purchased pack.
  • Bring down a pair of Modern Age basic action cards with their respective dice.

July 29 2018 - Gradually Stop Texting

Everyone's got their heads in their phones...

Players assemble a Golden Age team build, where the cards' buy in cost must number 2 through 7.  So the eight card choices must have a 2 cost card, a 3 cost card, a 4 cost card, a 5 cost card, a 6 cost card, and a 7 cost card.  The remaining two cards can have any number cost.  An extra 5 life points will be awarded at the game's start to any team that has no duplicate buy-in cost (that player will start with 25 life instead of 20).

Interesting, yes?

This is just getting started.

During each game, after turn 4 of the second player's turn ends, at the end of each round, both players turn off the text of their lowest cost card that is not turned off (owner chooses in case of a tie).  The dice stats and the card numbers will still be the same.
Standard tournament rules apply.

July 22 2018 - Realms of Energy Need Conquering!

Dice Masters is back at the OR!  After the past week off, the popular dice game gets a well-deserved return!
To welcome the return of the game, the game gets a new look using familiar rules!

Players will need to assemble a Modern Age team where there must be two cards that has lightning energy on its dice, two cards with fist energy on its dice, two cards with mask energy on its dice, and two cards with shield energy on its dice.

  • The object of the game is to conquer the realms of energy shown on the board.  It'll be a little like a "king-of-the-hill" scenario, but using the same gameplay of the regular Dice Masters game.  Players need to score as much victory points as possible (this is different from a player's life points).
  • This is achieved by taking over as many squares on the board as possible each of which will be worth a victory point.
  • However, if a player gains control of the majority of squares in a region (at least 2 per region), they gain 3 victory points.

Each region will be identified with one of the energy icons of the Dice Masters game.

  • To attack a square in a region, players must use at least ONE character die that has that energy icon on it and attack with it.  The rest of the force can have any energy as long as one die has the appropriate energy.  Should that matching attacking die be removied, the attack can still progress.  The energy requirement is only to initiate the attack, not continue it.
  • To control a square, that attacking dice must deal combat damage with an attack total greater than the region number.

Regions will have special abilities to overcome, announced at the event.

  • Any one player may send their dice to "block" the attack to prevent the possible takeover by reducing the total damage to the region.  Remember, the defending force does not need to crush the invaders, just block enough damage to prevent the attackers from applying damage equal to the region number.
  • This may be only done once per round per player and all sent dice will go to the prep zone.
  • Priority to send defenders goes to the previous player and if that player passes, then the next previous can choose and so on.

  • After a successful region attack the victorious player will place one of their markers on the square and all attacking dice are moved to the used pile whether or not those dice were blocked or not blocked.
  • Even if a square is occupied, another player may challenge a player with a marker in the region, by declaring an attack against that player (still meeting the energy requirements).
  • Applying successful combat damage to the player that is equal to or exceeds the region number will allow the upstart player to take the previous player's square.
  • If a player does not have the active character dice necessary to invade a region, they can still attack another player as normal.

  • Regular Dice Masters rules still applies in this event, so if a player's life points is reduced to zero, they will be out of the event.
  • However, their markers will remain until the game ends OR if another player decides to replace their marker with a total attack value that is twice that of the region number (again, still meeting energy requirements).

  • The game ends one round after ALL the squares are occupied. Once the last square has been taken over, all surviving players will have one last turn to "switch" any of those region squares to their control.
  • Tiebreakers will be determined by each player's life total, so traditional attacks on each other will still have some value.
  • If time is called and not all the squares are occupied, the game ends and scores will be tallied.

Come on down and bring along your inner conqueror!

July 15, 2018 - No Dice Master

Wizkids Heroclix Summer Open is being held all day

July 08, 2018 - Energy Crisis 5: Energy Crisis: Conquer the Realms of Energy!

Who's up for a new variation of the Dice Masters game?

For the last four weeks, players got the opportunity to play exclusively with only a single energy, and now comes the payoff!
Get ready to play with all the energies!

Players will need to assemble a Modern Age team where there must be two cards that has lightning energy on its dice, two cards with fist energy on its dice, two cards with mask energy on its dice, and two cards with shield energy on its dice.  Players will be supplied with a set of marker tokens (read on... this will make sense later).

Sounds like another event with a tweaked team build, doesn't it?

  • It does not end there.
  • This event requires to use their teams to conquer the world, represented on a board (hey, a Dice Masters boardgame)!

So, how does this Dice Masters "boardgame" work?

  • Not to worry, this will be a simple extension of the game everyone knows and plays, except players are trying to control the battlefield.

What does the battlefield look like?

  • The "board" will be broken down into regions.
  • Each region will have 3 squares and a number value.

Okay, how does someone win?

  • The object of this scenario is to score as much victory points as possible (this is different from a player's life points).
  • This is achieved by taking over as many squares on the board as possible each of which will be worth a victory point.
  • However, if a player gains control of the majority of squares in a region (at least 2 per region), they gain 3 victory points.

How exciting!  Seems pretty straightforward, almost too simple.  There must be something more, right?

  • Here is the catch.  Each region will be dominated by one of the energy icons of the Dice Masters game.
  • To attack a square in a region, players must use at least ONE character die that has that energy icon on it.
  • To control a square, that attacking dice must deal combat damage with an attack total greater than the region number.
  • On top of that, there will be special "rules" for each region (announced at the event).
  • After a successful attack the victorious player will place one of their markers on the square and all attacking dice are moved to the used pile.

What if another player does not want that to happen?

  • Any one player may send their dice to "block" the attack to prevent the possible takeover by reducing the total damage to the region.
  • This may be only done once per round and all sent dice will go to the prep zone.
  • Priority to send defenders goes to the previous player and if that player passes, then the next previous can choose and so on.

What if a region is fully occupied by other players' control markers (or even partially)?

  • Another player may challenge another player with a marker in the region, by declaring an attack against that player (still needing the energy requirements).
  • Applying successful combat damage to the player that is equal to or exceeds the region number will allow the upstart player to take the previous player's square.

How does this system affect the regular rules?

  • This should be considered as supplemental rules to the normal Dice Masters game.
  • If a player does not have the active character dice necessary to invade a region, they can still attack another player as normal.
  • Regular Dice Masters rules still applies in this event, so if a player's life points is reduced to zero, they will be out of the event.
  • However, their markers will remain until the game ends OR if another player decides to replace their marker with a total attack value that is twice that of the region number.

  • This is technically a battle royale event, so all players still need to be aware of each other's actions.
  • The game ends one round after ALL the squares are occupied.  Once the last square has been taken over, all surviving players will have one last turn to "switch" any of those region squares to their control.

What if at the end of the game, the players have a tie score?

  • Tiebreakers will be determined by each player's life total, so traditional attacks on each other will still have some value.

Is there a time limit?

  • Yes, there will only be so much time to take over the world, so players need to be active and grab as many region squares as possible.  If time is called and not all the squares are occupied, the game ends and scores will be tallied.

Whew!
Come on down and bring along your inner conqueror!

Superhero comics are reknown for their masked heroes!  This week the masks will come to playmats of Dice Masters!

Fear not though, there will be no requirements of costumes on the players this event.

  • Players will need to assemble a Modern Age team to challenge whoever is set before them.
  • The catch this time is that all team cards must have the "Mask" symbol.
  • All standard tournament rules still apply.

Well, why not?

  • Players need to bring forth a team where each color must dominate the dice of a card.
  • So the cards chosen must feature dice that are predominantly red, orange, yellow, green, blue (light blue), indigo (dark blue), and violet.  That last card can be either mostly black or mostly white.

Whoo.  Sounds like something fresh off a little kid's imagination and well-stocked toybox.

How cool would it be to run something like that for Dice Masters?

  • Players are invited to assemble a Golden Age team where the team must feature at least 6 characters (with related dice whose majority color matches the six different colors of the Gauntlet) and a Thanos.
  • The final card will be left up to the player.

  • Players are to assemble a Modern Age team build, but no card, including basic action cards, can do non-combat damage to opponents.
  • Standard tournament rules apply.

    • This means that whatever card text is on the chosen card will be ignored.
  • Only the dice cost and stats will be valid for this duration.
  • Should a die roll reveal a number that has already shut down cards, those cards will be reactivated.
  • Standard tournament rules still apply.

  • Players are invited to support a team from the Super Bowl.
  • Players should assemble a Modern Age team featuring the colors of the Eagles of Philadelphia or the Patriots of New England.
  • Teams will need to either feature dice with the colors of green/dark green and silver/gray OR red and blue/dark blue (yeah, yeah, white is a part of the color scheme for both teams, but that's covered by the sidekick dice).
  • Standard rules apply for this 3 round event.

January 28, 2018 - Breaking Even

Ever have one of those days?  Don't get mad, get even!

  • Players are to assemble their teams using an even number of dice.
  • What that means is two-fold.
    • One, the total number of dice has to be an even number.  Since the majority of games have players bringing in the maximum 20 dice, there should be no issue with this limitation.
    • The second part (which is a wee bit more challenging) is that ALL cards (except for the basic action cards) need to have an even number of dice attached to them.  That means all cards can have either only 2 or 4 dice attached to them.

  • Standard game rules are in effect for this 3 round event.

January 21, 2018 - Make A Name For Yourself

What's in a name? That which is called by any other would sound like one wants to meet... (wait, that's not quite right)

Players are about to find out how strong their name really is in the game, by assembling a Modern Age team where the first letter of each card's name must spell out the player's name (or at least the first eight letters of that name).

If all the letters of the first name do not fill out all eight slots, players will then use the letters of their last name until the slots are filled.  Slots are to be filled out as the name is spelled.  Any letters in the name that are not part of the the first eight letters cannot be represented.

Example: Say a player's name is Davy Jones.  The player may choose any card that starts with the letters;
D, A, V, Y, J, O, N, and E.  So that player's team can feature cards like Donatello, Aquaman, Vibranium Shield, Yellowjacket, Jessica Jones, Onslaught, Nova Corps Uniform, and Eye of Agamotto!  No cards for "S" are allowed for Davy since it falls in the ninth position of the name.

In the case of duplicate letters in a name, multiple cards starting with that letter must be present on the team.
Example: Say Peter Tork wants to play, too.  In this case, Peter would require TWO cards apiece for his letters "E", "T", and "R".  So his team would possibly include Parademon, Elektra, Talia Al-Ghul, Emma Frost, Ricochet, Two-Face, Oracle, and Raven.  Again, no card for "K" as that letter falls in the ninth spot.

  • This will be a three-round event.

December 24, 2017 - CHRISTMAS Gifts

Since this week's Dice Masters event is being run on Christmas Eve, it seems appropriate to have an event that shows how generous the opponent can be.

Players are to bring teams where the cards must be able to spell out CHRISTMAS with the first letter in each of the card names.  This will require each team to also bring a ninth card with its max set of related dice.  That card must be an action card (preferably item cards, though locations can be proper for the occasion) that has a cost of 5 or less (the articles "a", "an", and "the" will be allowed for this card only).

At the beginning of each game, each player will offer their ninth card (with dice) to the opponent to replace the card with the matching starting letter on their team (opponent's choice if there are multiple options).  If the opposing team does not have a matching letter among their remaining cards, then any card may be chosen to be replaced as long as the following conditions are observed.

The number of dice on the team before the gift giving phase must match the number of dice on the team after the gift giving phase.  Any surplus dice on the gifted card cannot be used and are not allowed in play.  Should the gifted dice not have enough dice to match that of the replaced dice, then the second option will be to find another opposing card with a matching number of dice and replace that one instead.  Should even that option be not available, then the gifted card is not in play and the opposing player may then choose which card (of matching number of dice) their own gift will replace instead.

Each player must put at least 3 of the gift dice into play during the game (or all of them, whichever one comes first).  Game play ends only when either a player has brought in their gifted dice into play and reduced the opposing player's points to zero, or the allotted time ends.

Always has been said that with gifts, it's the thought that counts.  After all these rules, there is a lot of thought counting in this event.

Standard game rules apply.

December 17, 2017 - This Weekend Spells Star Wars: Last Jedi!

The phenomena of George Lucas continues this weekend with the release of their newest film, Star Wars: The Last Jedi!
Bust out the lightsabers, X-Wings, and plucky robots, because this movie is the one that will finish the year of 2017 with a Death Star bang (maybe).

  • Players have an opportunity bring out their light or dark sides by bringing in a Modern Age team (kind of peculiar when one realizes the Star Wars series happened a long time ago) where all eight cards (hey, what a coincidence, since this is Star Wars VIII), must spell out L.A.S.T.J.E.D.I. using the first letter of the card's name (the articles "a", "an", and "the" do not count for this scenario build).
  • Should that prove too problematic, teams can feature cards spelling S.T.A.R.W.A.R.S. instead.
  • Standard rules apply.

December 10, 2017 - A Failed Affiliation

There comes a time where several of differing backgrounds unite to fight for the common good.

  • Players assemble a traditional squad with at least 6 characters.
  • Each character must have a team affiliation.  However, no affiliation can match another.
  • If a character has multiple affiliations, then no other character can have those.
  • Standard game play is in effect.

December 03, 2017 - Big Theory Bang-Up

A random bit from a big show with a bang in theory.
Bernadette: The thesis committee accepted my doctoral dissertation. I’m getting my PhD.
Penny: Oh!
Sheldon: Oh, congratulations.
Penny: Wow, so that means (pointing to Raj) you’re a doctor, (pointing to Leonard) you’re a doctor, (pointing to Sheldon) you’re a doctor, (pointing to Bernadette) you’re a doctor, and Howard, you know a lot of doctors.

Players gather their educated forces.

Each player will assemble a Golden Age team where all the characters have to have the word(s) "doc", "doctor", "or dr." in the title of their name.

One card may have the word(s) " mister", or "mr." on it (Howard) and one card may have the word "miss" or "ms." on it (Penny) instead of "doctor".
Standard game rules apply.

Leonard:  The guy is one lab accident away from being a supervillain

November 26, 2017 - Thanksgiving Birds

It is the weekend for giving thanks, for insane shopping, and for bringing a bird to the table!

  • Players are invited to bring a golden age team to compete in this week's Dice Masters event.
  • Each team must field a squad where there must be one character card (with respective die/dice) that represents a bird in his/her name and embracing the bird motif.

Examples of some potential charcters:

  • Falcon
  • Hawk
  • Dove
  • Black Canary
  • Vulture
  • Robin
  • Penguin
  • Songbird

Examples not accepted as characters for the bird options:

  • Superman: Not a BIRD or a plane (even says so in its name )
  • Static: Virgil HAWKins
  • Carmine FALCONe
  • Green Arrow: ROBIN Hood

The dice from the bird card will have the following ability in addition to its normal powers:

  • Too Much To Eat:  If a non-sidekick character is KOed by a bird die, return that die to its respective card.
  • Can't Believe I Ate the Whole Thing: If any opposing character KO's a bird die place that character in the Used Pile and the bird on its respective card.
  • Mutual Destruction: If both a bird and an opposing character are KOed, return both to their respective cards.

  • If a team is made of 8 bird characters cards, at the beginning of each turn before pulling dice from the dice bag, the active player can choose ONE of those bird characters to gain the above abilities.  If no choice is declared, the bird from the previous turn remains the bird for that round

  • Standard gameplay rules still apply.

November 19, 2017 - Tomb of Annihilation Draft Day

Dice Masters has released the newest expansion for the D&D dice: Tomb of Annihilation!

  • In Dungeons & Dragons Dice Masters: Tomb of Annihilation, players will be able to collect a party of heroes or a horde of monsters to pit against their opponents.
  • Introducing 30 new adventurers and monsters, with exciting new spells and new ways to play, Dice Masters brings Collectible Dice Building to the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms universe!
  • Players may recognize some of the art from the Tomb of Annihilation roleplaying game on the cards and dice. Players will also recognize threats from Curse of Strahd, the Player’s Handbook, and the Monster Manual.

  • Players will be invited to check out this new set with a regular draft!
  • All that is required of players is to bring a set of NPC (sidekick) dice, a couple of basic action dice sets, and enough change for a pack ($9.99 each).
  • Upon the opening of packs, players hang onto the basic action cards from the pack, place the dice into the center area and begin a standard draft with the remaining cards.
  • Each drafted card will come with 2 related dice.
  • Teams will be assembled from the drafted elements.
  • There will be three rounds of competition.

October 29, 2017 - Trick or Treating With Peanuts

Did you know...
Although it is unknown precisely where and when the phrase “trick or treat” was coined, the custom had been firmly established in American popular culture by 1951, when trick-or-treating was depicted in the Peanuts comic strip.

How about that?  So, getting inundated by kids using that particular catch-phrase is all Charlie Brown's fault?

Good grief!

Well then, it's about time that the iconic phrase, "Trick or Treat" should now see it's very own variation for this week's Dice Masters (insert sinister laughter accompanied by the random lightning and thunder in the background).

  • Players will need to assemble a Modern Age team to bring for play.
  • At the beginning of each player's turn, that player will have to roll one of the dice pulled from the dice bag or from the prep zone.  This roll will have the following results:
    • Character face up:  Put that character face into play at the level rolled for free (Treat!).
    • Energy face up:  Take that many points worth of damage to your life total (Trick!).
  • Game play continues as normal.

The game can get very painful for one player or another, so plan accordingly.  If things do not go well, then remember the classic Peanuts gang refrain;     Charlie Brown, you blockhead!

October 22, 2017 - X-Men: First Class Rainbow Draft

Question:  Who would like to participate in a first class rainbow draft?  The answer:  Who wouldn't?

  • Players are invited to come down to participate in a Rainbow Draft featuring the newest Dice Masters release, X-Men: First Class!
  • Each player will be required to bring down a playset of sidekick dice, two sets of basic action dice and their chosen cards, along with enough change to purchase 12 boosters of the latest set.

See http://dicemasters.com/rainbowdraft.pdf for more information on the specifics of the rainbow draft event.

October 15, 2017 - Monsters vs the Mob

Who doesn't love a great monster movie?  The ones where the monster is empowered by a victimized populace, yet it is that same populace that brings it down.  Time to put that experience in the Dice Masters game!

Players assemble a Modern Age team.

  • Each team must have at least one character that has Monster in either its name or text.
  • All Sidekicks (yes, this includes allies) will gain two abilities.
  • Ability One:  Sacrifice this die to reduce the purchase or field cost of a character die with Monster either in its name or text by 1 (generic energy).
  • Ability Two:  Sacrifice this die to spin down a character die with Monster in its name or text 1 level.
  •  All other standard rules apply.

October 08, 2017 - A Wild Night

Ready for something a little wild?

The key to this event will be the wild card.
The power of the wild card is one of utilitarian effect.  For Dice Masters, the wild card allows a player to pick any energy type to use for that die to spend on their costs of dice.  For this event, the wild card is about to get a little more wild.

  • Players assemble a Modern Age team where at least 6 of the dice have to be of a matching theme.
  • This can be any theme.
  • Put together a Guardians of the Galaxy team, or a Bat-family team, or whatever matches.
  • The remaining two can be any two non-character cards/dice or two character dice of the same theme as the rest of the team.

Here is where the wild card kicks things up a notch.

  • Whenever a wild card is rolled, in addition to being able to choose any energy symbol, such a die may be used with the following ability.
  • ?:  This die may instead of paying for the cost of something, may be used (like a Global Ability) to force the re-roll of any one die.
  • Keep in mind that all standard rules will still apply.
  • This die will remain in the Reserve Pool until used, or is discarded to the Used Pile when the Player's turn begins.

All other Dice Masters Rules will still apply.

October 01, 2017 - As Simple As Black and Orange

It's one thing to design teams around special abilities and themes, now it's time to try a different tactic.
Welcome to Halloween month...

  • Players need to assemble a standard Golden Age team where all the dice have to be black and/or orange.
  • So the main body of the die and not the symbols (those can be any color), has to be those colors.
  • Red or red-orange does not count for this scenario.
  • So watch out for those "fool's gold" qualifying dice.
  • The new "marbled" dice can count only if the majority of the die is obviously black or orange (if it looks 50/50, then it won't count).

All other standard tournament rules are in play.

September 24, 2017 - Sidekick League

We are excited to announce Sidekick League, a new initiative to introduce players to HeroClix, and Dice Masters.
Sidekick League is a casual, fun, and welcoming event series for you and a friend!

All regular players should try to invite a newcomer to partner up with for this event.  This will provide a great opportunity to share the coolness that is Dice Masters.

  • Each player will need to have a standard build team but with only one basic action card (the experienced player can supply the newcomer with this).
  • Each card on the team can have only up to 2 dice per card.
  • The first two rounds will have the experienced players playing with their sidekicks in a two vs two match.
  • The final round will have the sidekick run solo to see what they have learned.

If players don't have sufficient dice for themselves and their sidekick, don't worry.  Basic teams will be available for learning options.

September 17, 2017 - A Return to a  Modern Age Tournamen

After numerous involved scenarios and team builds, this week's Dice Masters event returns to something more traditional.

  • Players need to assemble a Modern Age team build.
  • No limitations beyond the standard rules of the game.
  • Three rounds of classic construction creations clashing in cantankerous collisions!

September 10, 2017 - Guardians of the Galaxy Rainbow Draft

Celebrate the debut of Dice Masters latest release, Guardians of the Galaxy (IT'S ON THE SHELVES RIGHT NOW!), Other Realms plays host to a Rainbow Draft using packs from that self-same series!

Each player should come to the event with 8 Sidekick Dice, 12 Basic Action Dice, 4 Indicator Cards, and 2 Basic Action Cards (players may choose which Basic Action Cards they.d like to use after completing the draft, but must use the same 2 throughout the event).

Each player in the draft sits down with 12 packs of Guardians of the Galaxy Dice Masters (IT'S ON THE SHELVES RIGHT NOW!), to draft with. A set of 6 packs is opened. As each player opens their packs they should verify that the cards and dice match. Keeping their cards secret, players should set them aside into a pile of 12 cards. The next 6 packs are opened and when complete are placed into a separate pile of 12 cards in front of the player (the piles are not to be mixed). All dice are placed into the center, and arranged as below so players can see exactly which dice and how many of each will be available during the draft. We call it Rainbow Draft as players may elect to sort them by color to allow for easier visual spotting of which cards correspond to which dice during the draft.

Each player then takes the pile they most recently prepared of Guardians of the Galaxy Dice Masters (IT'S ON THE SHELVES RIGHT NOW!), and after a short amount of time to review the cards, they select one, setting it face down in front of them, and passing the remaining cards to the player to their right. This card begins a pile of cards that players will be able to use in their team. After all players have selected a card, they take the pile from their left to select their next card and repeat the process until they are passed a single card to be placed into their pile.

After the first pile of 12 cards have been depleted, players should take a moment to review the cards they drafted (each player should have 12 cards at this point). After reviewing their cards, players will return them to a face-down pile in front of them and draft the second pile the same way as they did the first, this time passing in the opposite direction (left).

After drafting all piles, players should take dice from those that were set aside to match each of their cards. They will then construct a tournament team based on the Basic Action Cards they own and the cards they drafted of Guardians of the Galaxy Dice Masters (IT'S ON THE SHELVES RIGHT NOW!). This tournament team can have up to 8 cards and up to 20 dice across those cards (many teams will have less than this). The basic action dice and cards and sidekick dice do not count against this limit of 8 cards and 20 dice.

Players then face off in a three-round tournament with their constructed teams drafted from Guardians of the Galaxy

September 03, 2017 - Nothing Is Free

Challenge your budgetary skills!  Everything has a cost!  See what you can afford!

  • Players will field a standard Dice Masters team, where there can be no cost of zero on anything but the basic sidekick dice.
  • This means that the dice cost on a card cannot be zero.
  • The field cost of any die aside from the basic sidekick dice cannot be zero.
  • This will place extra emphasis on rolling the energies required to pay for the dice as well as having the appropriate type to pay for them.
  • Everything will have a cost to bring into the game, and everything will have a cost to bring onto the field.
  • All standard game rules still apply to this event.

August 27, 2017 - There Can Only Be One

Ever want to test out how good a character die really is in the game just by itself?  No multiples.  No duplicates.  Here is your chance!

  • Players will need to assemble a Modern Age team where each of the eight character cards brought to the game can only have ONE die.
  • Basic Action dice will still be allowed at the normal three-count.

August 20, 2017 - First to Zero

Time for a tweak to the win condition.

  • Players will construct a standard Dice Masters team.
  • Each player will start the game with 10 points.
  • However, unlike the standard method for victory, this event will end with the first player to reduce their opponent's points to zero AND summon all 20 of their dice into the field.
  • Obviously, all teams must be constructed of the maximum 20 dice.
  • To further complicate things, if a player is able to have three characters deal unblocked damage to their opponent in a single attack, that player may return a die from the opponent's used pile to their respective card.
  • All other standard tournament rules will apply.

August 13, 2017 - Dice Masters Doubles

Dice Masters will take a more cooperative direction with the introduction of Dice Masters Doubles!  Bring you and a friend or family (or a stranger if they're okay with it) to compete together to take out other teams to take the top spot!

This will be a Modern Age event.

Dice Masters Doubles

What is Dice Masters Doubles?
Dice Masters Doubles lets you play Dice Masters in a 2 vs 2 format! It gives players a new Dice Masters experience for constructed play.

How do I set up a Doubles game of Dice Masters?
First, teams should be picked. Each player will get to pick up to 4 character or action cards to use, plus a Basic Action Card of their choice. Each team of 2 players will have up to 8 character or action cards, plus 2 Basic Action Cards. Each team of players needs to follow normal team construction rules: they can’t have more than one copy of a given character (such as 2 versions of the same named character or action) and their 2 Basic Action cards can’t be the same card. Each character or action card may have up to the maximum number of dice allowed for the card (no matter how many dice this puts on the team in total).

Total number of dice cannot exceed 20 for the team.  Each card brought to the team must have at least one die.  Each player cannot have more than 12 dice nor less than 8 dice.

Each player’s bag will begin the game with 8 Sidekick dice in it.
Each team will start at 30 life. Teams cannot increase their starting life above the starting total (30).
Teammates will sit next to one another, across from their opponents. Each player puts their character cards on the outside of the play area. Each team
places their Basic Action Cards somewhere convenient for all players above character cards or in the center), with an indicator card, and each should have 6 of the appropriately colored Basic Action Dice placed on it.

Playing the Game
Determine which team will go first. Both members of a team go through the steps of a turn together. They Clear and Draw at the same time. They Roll and Reroll at the same time. They buy and field at the same time. You guessed it, they also go through the parts of the Attack Step at the same time. For the defending team, both members will declare blockers at the same time. In the case of timing conflicts, just as in a standard game of Dice Masters the active player chooses the order, in Doubles, the active team will choose the order. Players can discuss decisions at any time. Players must pay the cost to purchase and field dice individually from among the dice they personally rolled and cannot use their teammate’s energy.

The active player can choose to attack either opposing player, leaving their partner to attack the remaining opponent. Players may not block for their teammate.

Any player can use any Global and effects of Globals or other abilities can target across the center if desired.
Effects that would apply to all of your characters include your teammate’s characters as well.

So Captain America, Sentinel of Liberty’s effect would make all of your Sidekicks and all of your teammate’s sidekicks get +2A. Effects that would apply to all of your opponent’s dice affect their entire team, such as Marvel Girl, Telekinesis who reads, “When fielded, spin each opposing character own one level (if able).”
Effects that are centered on one character, such as Spider-Man, Webslinger only affect the player defending against him (that player’s teammate wouldn’t be allowed to have his characters block Spider-Man anyway).

Buying Dice
Players may only buy from among the 4 cards they brought to the game and among the Basic Actions. A player may not purchase their teammate’s dice.
Players may not buy more than 1 of each Basic Action Card during a turn.

Prep Area
Both teams share a common Prep Area! It is best placed between teammates. Dice go into that Prep Area as in a regular game. When it is time for teams to roll their dice, they decide amongst themselves who will get which dice, splitting them up however they like. This means characters can migrate from one player’s field and ultimately end up in their teammate’s bag!

Winning
A team wins by bringing an opposing team to 0 life!

August 06, 2017 - Switch

Dice in this game can be used for any rarity edition of its respective card.  Choosing between those cards can be a big difference-maker in team construction.

Now, think about this for a bit.  What if you didn't have to choose?

  • Players are to assemble a standard team.
  • Of the possible eight a player may select, two of those cards may have all versions available for play(no more than three different versions).

  • How it works:
    • At the start of the game, a player selects one version of the character or item or action as part of their lineup.
    • During the game, that player may opt to switch a card to another version by paying one energy (matching the card's requirements).
    • The older version then is removed from play and its related powers and abilities are inactive.
    • The new version takes over and its own powers and abilities take over immediately.
    • The related die/dice now utilize the replacement card's text, including cost, stats, and abilities.
    • This act of switching is free if the replacement card is a lower cost than the original card.

  • Game continues as normal.
  • Standard tournament rules still apply.

July 30, 2017 - 4 and More

Why do things of value cost so much?  This week at 3pm, the Dice Masters event to aim to find out just why (or at least if it's worthwhile).

  • Players will bring together a Modern Age team to challenge all comers!
  • All team cards must have a cost of 4 or greater, with four of the cards having a cost of 5 or greater.
  • Basic Action dice are exempt from this cost limitation.
  • Standard tournament build requirements are in play.

July 23, 2017 - Rainbow Draft

Once more unto the breach...
Players will get the chance to experience the joys of the Rainbow Draft.

  • 12 boosters will be purchased by each player to be entered in a draft format.
  • Cards will be passed about the table as players anxiously await the rainbow of possibilities set before them through the display of dice.
  • Teams will be constructed according to what each has drafted.

Requirements for the draft:

  • Bring down your basic action dice (Modern Age), sidekick dice, mat (optional), and enough spare change for the 12 boosters.
  • No umbrellas required in the store.

July 16, 2017 - In Case of Emergency

With all the activity among Dice Masters players this week, Other Realms is offering a secondary option for players.

Participants of this week's Sunday Dice Masters event will have multiple options to challenge their game skills.

  • On one hand, with enough players, a Rainbow Draft will be run using a set chosen by popular demand.
    • 12 boosters purchased by each player will be drafted into a lively competition based on team build skills and dice play.
  • Behind door number two, players will engage in an epic Battle Royale where each player enters their team onto the battlefield with hopes of being the last one standing.
    • Team construction for this event will be designed on a standard team build where each team must have characters that do not cost more than 4 to enter the game.

 Standard tournament rules still apply.

July 09, 2017 - An All-Star Baseball Team

Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd;
Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack,
I don't care if I never get back.
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
If they don't win, it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
At the old ball game.

  • Players must a assemble a baseball team worth of characters.
  • The Modern Age team build must have 9 character cards (as opposed to the typical 8), but each character card can have no more than 2 dice apiece.
  • Standard team construction rules apply.

July 02, 2017 - Celebrating the Fourth on the Second

Independence Day will soon be here!  Time to honor such a momentous day with a Dice Masters event!

  • Players need to bring teams that feature only specific dice.
  • Players need to scour their inventories for dice that are either red or blue and put together a team where at least one die of each color should be represented.
  • This only applies to the actual dice cube and not whatever color the markings on the dice are.
  • The markings can be of any color, but the cube aspect of the die must be a hue of either red or blue.
  • By the time the team is completed, teams should be honoring the classic red, white (sidekick and basic action dice), and blue.
  • All other standard team construction rules still apply.

June 25, 2017 - Single Booster Constructed

  • This week's event will require all participants bring a standard build team with just six cards.
  • This event will be a Modern Age event.  So only Modern Age boosters/cards/dice will be valid for use in this event.
  • Each player will supplement their team with the purchase of a single booster (any Modern series will do).
  • The pack of two dice and cards will be added to the team and both must be played at some point in the game in order to win the game.
  • So if the opponent is reduced to zero points, but your booster dice have not been brought into the game yet, the game continues until both requirements are met to win the game.
  • Basic action dice and sidekick dice are still required as normal for this event.

  • This is not a comprehensive list of all father figures in the game.

  • Should a team feature both father and child together, the child character will do an extra point of damage in the game.
  • All other standard rules will apply to the game.

June 11, 2017 - Time to take the new set out for a ride!

June 04, 2017 - Wondering Women - Modern Age is here!

As a little extra tweak to this upcoming Sunday event, we will try out the new Modern Age format to refine the team construction rules this week.

What is the Modern Age format?
With the beginning of June, WizKids is setting a Modern Age format separate from the Golden Age format.

What's the difference, you ask?
To begin with, Modern Age will contain all sets from DC Comics Dice Masters: War of Light and newer, as well as all promos released after War of Light (September 16th, 2015).

This will not be a permanent change to the weekly game format, as there will be other events where Golden Age will be featured.

This is simply an effort to set up a few events which are more in sync with the national game scene.
